![]() ![]() The camera provides an isometric view to start a three-quarter raised perspective that allows us to take in the entire world at a glance. What makes these courses so interesting is our perspective of them. Captain Toad waddles around them, riding platforms, zipping through tubes, and pursuing familiar objectives such as collecting coins, mushrooms, and stars. The Captain Toad levels in that game are smallish, cube-like environments that feel vaguely akin to anthills thanks to their various tunnels and peaks. Still, it’s nice that she at least appears as a major – and quite capable – playable character.īut regardless of what it’s called, this game furthers a particular style of puzzle platforming that we first saw in a series of mini-game levels in last year’s beloved Super Mario 3D World. Given her substantial presence, this game could easily have been called Toad & Toadette’s Treasure Tracking Adventure, placing Toadette on par with her male partner – something that rarely happens in Nintendo games. In fact, Nintendo kind of missed an opportunity here to notch a much-needed win in the gender equality column. Toad’s pink ponytailed counterpart takes over as the primary playable character for a big chunk of the game after Captain Toad gets kidnapped. As its name suggests, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is all about Mario’s mushroom helmeted pal Captain Toad, distinguished from plain old Toad by virtue of his safari/spelunking garb.
